A Presentation on the History of Jordan Lake
About this event
Join us at 1:00pm on June 3 to learn about
The History of Jordan Lake

When people take their boats out on the waters of Jordan Lake, they may not realize they're floating above an entire buried community, including homes, farms, foundations and even graveyards.
Jordan Lake didn't exist before 1970--and wasn't full until about 12 years later. Before the project began an extensive exploration of the archaeology of the area was required.
Today most of us are familiar with the lake, beaches, trails, and woodlands at Jordan Lake State Recreation Area, but the area was not always a recreational space. After a devastating tropical storm in 1945, the government began to look at methods of flood control for the Cape Fear River basin. In 1962, the Army Corps of Engineers submitted a plan that recommended building three reservoirs.
Ultimately only Jordan Lake was constructed.
We are very fortunate to have John Morris speak to us. John headed the N.C. Division of Water Resources for many years,
and is a noted expert on the history of the lake. John has generously offered to speak to Newcomers about this fascinating history.
This will be a great prelude to our upcoming Jordan Lake Boat Tours on June 17.
We hope you can join us!
