Club Functions

The Greater Chapel Hill Newcomers Club sponsors functions where the entire club can come together to enjoy a speaker, find out about the latest club news, and socialize.  Some functions will be strictly social (dinner, cocktail hour,or dancing) and others will include a brief program that will focus on venues and topics specific to us as newcomers.

Each Newsletter will provide details and Evites will be sent on a monthly basis.

2009/2010 Events

Autumn at the Ackland
Sunday, September 20, 5 - 7 pm
Ackland Art Museum, Chapel Hill

Join us for a free champagne reception and hors d'oeuvres at the Ackland on the campus of UNC.  This is a wonderful way to "meet and greet" new and returning members while learning about the upcoming events planned for the 2009-2010 season.  The museum has an international collection of almost 15,000 prints, drawings, photographs, ceramics, sculptures, and paintings.

What’s This Craziness
Called UNC Basketball?

Wednesday, October 21, 2009 12 - 4 pm
Dean Smith Center/ UNC Basketball Museum

Spend an action-packed afternoon learning about the dynamic UNC basketball program, where it is said that legends are born and champions rise to the occasion. ESPN associate-producer Fred Kiger shares his insight on what has driven UNC to win five NCAA Championships. Following lunch at the Rams Club, you can spend the remainder of your time at the newly opened Carolina Basketball Museum.

Gala Holiday Celebration

The Carolina Inn, Chapel Hill

Come and enjoy the holiday season at the beautiful Carolina Inn.  Stroll through the lobby and view the magical seasonal decorations.  Enjoy a drink and socialize with other newcomer friends before a full course dinner.

Mardi Gras Dance Party
Saturday, February 20, 7 - 11 pm
Carrboro Century Center

Please join your newcomer friends at the New Orleans style dance party featuring music and dance lessons by Richard Badu.  We will have a variety of music styles and brief instruction so you can polish up your dance steps.  This event is for both singles and couples.  Wine, beer, and light refreshments will be available.

An Evening under the Stars
Friday, March 19, 6:00 – 9:00 pm
Morehead Planetarium and Science Center

Located on the campus of The University of North Carolina, the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center offers dazzling multimedia star shows and interactive exhibits featuring current science research. Join us for a dessert reception in the dining room atop the center to learn about the history of this unique center, the latest update to the equipment that provides your pathway to the stars, and what the future holds for the planetarium. Planetarium show included.

Newcomers Annual Meeting
&
(How UNC Is Leading In LEED* Certification)
 Saturday, April 17 9:00 am – 1:00 pm
NC Botanical Gardens Education Center

The newly opened Education Center demonstrates that a “green” building can be not only environmentally responsible, but also beautiful and welcoming. Dr. Peter White, Director of NCBG, shares how it was designed and constructed to exceed the highest standards for sustainability and be certified at the platinum level. Touring the facility and gardens is available following the Newcomers Club’s Annual Meeting.

Kentucky Derby Party
Saturday, May 1, 5 - 8 pm
Chapel Hill Country Club

"Race to the finish line with the Chapel Hill Newcomers Club."  Join us for an afternoon and evening of fun at the newly remodeled Chapel Hill Country Club.  Sip mint juleps on the terrace and then watch horse racing's most traditional event on a large screen TV.  A delicious southern style buffet will follow the race.
